Commentary

Located at the northern end of the Sunshine Coast, Noosa Heads is one of the most sought after addresses in the southeast corner. The area is popular with owner occupiers and investors alike from across Australia and overseas, drawn to the laidback lifestyle, the Noosa National Park and one of the few northeast facing beaches in southeast Queensland.

Noosa Heads is one of the three major centres of the Noosa region on the Sunshine Coast. It is located 136 kilometres north of Brisbane. The Noosa River forms one boundary of the town, the headlands of the Noosa National Park another. Behind is Noosaville and Noosa Junction. Because of its density of rich people, Noosa is often referred to as "the Monaco of Australia."

At the heart of Noosa is Hastings Street. Featuring a stylish yet relaxed atmosphere, Hastings Street is made up of a variety of alfresco dining, boutique stores and top class holiday apartments and hotels.  Unlike other coastal locations Noosa Heads is free of high rise buildings, preserving its village ambience and natural beauty, and in turn ensuring that it remains the ideal location for coastal property buyers, however, the Noosa shire is subject to a population cap.

Regardless of location, Noosa Heads residents have easy access to one of the best outdoor playgrounds in Queensland. A tribute to the coastal lifestyle Queensland has become known for, Noosa Heads is home to several beaches along Laguna Bay, the Noosa National Park and a myriad of waterways coming off the Noosa River. The Noosa Springs Golf Course is also available for lovers of the game.

Permanent residents are well serviced by retail, transport and educational facilities. Supermarkets and retail outlets are available in Noosa Junction and Noosaville - all connected by local bus routes. Primary and secondary schools are available in the neighbouring suburb of Sunshine Beach.

History

The shire's tourism exponentially grew shortly after the Second World War, when gold miners from Gympie took vacation in the Noosa Shire.  In the 1800s, Noosa's early wealth came from the timber and milling industries with tourism developing in the late 1920s. The town has been the site of many tussles between developers and those seeking to preserve the town. Since the seventies, people have continued to migrate from southern states.

 

Transport

Noosa Heads is the tourist heart of Noosa district, with many restaurants and hotels. The main street is Hastings Street, which lies directly behind the seashore. Buses to elsewhere in the Sunshine Coast depart from Noosa Heads bus station.

 

Surfing

Noosa Heads' main attraction is its beaches. Its main beach and its small bays around the headland are common surfing locations which are known on world surfing circuits. One of its major surfing contests involves the Noosa Festival of Surfing. This festival attracts large numbers of longboarders.
